Relinking embedded links

When publishing a page to another space, links in the published page will be updated to redirect users to equivalent pages in the destination space. Links to pages, homepages, headings and anchors will be updated to point to equivalent entities in the destination space if they exist.

If the original page has a link to another page in the original space, the link on the published page will update to redirect users to the same page in the destination space. If an equivalent page does not exist in the destination space, the link to the original page will be retained.

In order for links to be updated, the title of the pages in the original space and the destination space must match exactly. This is a case-sensitive match and will not work for pages that have different cases.

Links on the published page will update to point to equivalent pages in the destination space

If the page being published has links to headings and anchors in the original space, the links will be updated on the published page to redirect users to equivalent headings and anchors in the destination space.

In the destination space, if the equivalent headings or anchors do not exist but a page with the same title as the one in the original space does, the link will redirect users to the top of the equivalent page in the destination space.

However, if the equivalent page does not exist, the heading and anchor links will not be updated and will redirect users to the original space.

Links to space homepages will now also be updated when the page is published. Upon publishing, if the original page had links to the original space homepage, these will now be updated on the published page to link to the homepage of the destination space.

For URL styled links (where the URL of the link is displayed to users), the displayed URL will be modified to match the new address on the published page. The space key and the page ID will be updated to reflect the equivalent page in the destination space.

Links will be not be updated in the following cases:

  • If a page with the same title does not exist in the destination space

  • If the link in the original page links to a page not in the original space

  • If the link points to content other than a page, space homepage, heading or anchor (for example, blogs or other content types)

  • If the link resides in an ancestor of the page being published

  • If a page is published (along with its ancestor) for the first time and contains a link to its ancestor

  • If the link is a “tiny link” generated using the Share → Copy link option on the page

  • If the link is of a deprecated type
